The rules are actually out now, here's a link to everything that's currently there: snip.li/pTmLooking at the game. It feels a bit weird to me. Like they tried to make a system where you can potentially play anything in the 40k universe and the result is kind of unfocused. On the one hand it has rules for playing eldar and orks right off the bat but on the other hand it feels like a lot of stuff was crammed in without any real thought for how it'd interact. For example, the game divides itself into 5 tiers and suggests that each campaign should have a 'Framework' (premise) and a tier. So the equivilent to a Only War campaign might be tier 1 with everyone being part of the IG. Except this means no-one can be anything but guardsmen and maybe a priest without homebrewing stuff because the tier 1 archetypes are trying to cover everything with a couple of obvious IG related archetypes having been bumped higher for some reason. So you'd probably need to homebrew in a bunch of new archetypes just so the game won't be full of identical characters.

Simmilarly, if you want to play a Xenos or Space Marine oriented game you're probably going to have 3 archetypes available to you by default. Archetypes aren't as restrictive as D&D classes but it still feels a bit straightjacketed when you look at it that way.I haven't really looked at the specific gameplay rules beyond character creation, so maybe its got some great gameplay but at the moment it feels like the game is stuck in some horrible jack-of-all-trades state where in theory you can run anything the FFG RPGs could and more but it doesn't really do anything so well that you'd want to choose it instead of one of the FFG games or some homebrew. Maybe with time there'll be some supplements released to flesh out the more common Frameworks with some non-homebrew options but for now I don't think it's really worth it unless you're really into the rules or were planning on doing something that would require you homebrewing stuff regardless of what system you used like a Tau campaign. game divides itself into 5 tiers and suggests that each campaign should have a 'Framework' (premise) and a tierWhy the fuck has the WFRPG idea of having a trillion classes of varying strengths and then rolling on a giant table to see what you were stopped being used? You'll never get as good a story out of five guardsman as 'An elven swordmaster, a dwarven slayer, and a halfling cook go into a bar'. It makes players think more and has funnier situations than if you coddle them with powertier BS.You just have to have quick char-gen so you can replace characters as they drop out (read: get eaten by beastmen).

I know I'm going to get shit for it but I honestly like the new system so far despite previously posting about how disappointing the Free scenario was. People are annoyed by how it is trying to encompass a wide array of archetypes and races at the expense of detail, pointing out how tier 1 games have a very limited amount of archetypes to choose from and it is very true. With that being said, I don't think you are as reliant on the strictures of your class to make a functional and interesting character with this new system as you were with the FFG games. There are only 3 Imperial Guard archetypes in the core rulebook (Guardsman Tier 1, Storm Trooper Tier 2, and Commissar Tier), but you're not bound by the retarded aptitude system FFG came up with, so you can make guardsman who have totally different builds that are all functional within the context of the rules.

As much as I enjoyed OW and DH2, it was really annoying to sift through the mountain of system mastery bullshit just to get your character off the ground. The most egregious garbage were the half-assed splatbooks they released that contained advanced classes (OW) and roles (DH2). They had cool abilities and functions for a party, but more than a good half of them had such poorly conceptualized aptitudes that you would be spending double the xp other classes would need in order function.

Talents feel more in their proper place as something that is supposed to make you better at specific actions as opposed to defining your character's ability as a whole; requiring you to stack a bunch of them in order to stupid, even game breaking things but at the expense of all other aspects of the game such as social or even skills that would make sense for your character to at least be competent in order to be so good at said thing. As for tiers, I think they scale up a little too linearly, but I like the concept in general. It gives a sense of scale as to what kind of characters are appropriate for the game you are running, along mechanically expanding the threshold of stats, penalties, enemies, and gear your characters will able to deal with. You can also bring lower tiers up to higher level games by ascending them, but so far the book doesn't provide anyway to take a higher tier down to a lower one. If you really want to ignore tier lists and keep characters at their starting archetype level, you can instead award xp to make up for the difference, and levels or rank which give you bonus die if you have archetype abilities and talents associated with a specific action.

This will create a situation where lower characters have lower thresholds for their stats compared to higher tiered characters, but giving them an equal amount of xp and more ranks allow them to get more bonus die more frequently. (Example, a new tac spacemarine is tier 3 and has a higher threshold for stats than a guardsman, but if he's rank 1 vs the guardsman's rank 3, the guardsman will be getting more bonus die for rank granting talents and abilities compared to the space marine). Could be a good way to represent an experienced guardsman vs a newly minted space marine. I think the tier system works well enough as it is, but if bothers you a lot, I think using ranks for balance could be a more interesting alternative. WANG is more 'player friendly' without the fluffy feeling of impending doom.I would say despite me liking this new system, it is one of the weakest points of the system right now. It's like some of the writers understand what the themes and tone of the game should be, while other segments look like they tried to graft 40k onto a D&D story.

I think at best, they are trying to get a better feel for the setting, or at worst, trying to subvert it in their own, faggoty way.Despite liking this new rulesystem, there is some egregious shit I cannot abide by, and that I get the feeling like they didn't edit this for shit. I am relatively new to tabletop rpgs, but the fact these assclowns didn't even check to see if their tables match in character creation section is just totally inexcusable. It's not even a couple numbers off, THE ENTIRE SUMMARY CHART SAVE SKILLS IS OFF! I've ruled for my table that they are to go by the charts listed in their specific sections. You may think that may be a little harsh of a judgement but that's not all, they have quick-pick stat arrays, but if you actually do the math, the cost and arrays don't match up if you were to manually buy them, and there is not explanation of the difference in cost. Running my first session next month, did character creation with my party.

I know it's not proprietary to the game, but sitting down and discussing tier and framework kind of helped get players to better plan their characters out for the story arc. So far, I have three people who have extensive 40k knowledge and ffg play, and 2 totally green people off the bat. From my personal experience, the new people seem to have a much easier time picking up the dice pool system than when I hosted new people on the d100 system. Wrath and Glory has not developed enough Space Marine options in either gear or character options.

It's bloated and clunky, but there are an insane amount of options, lore, and equipment variants that will allow you to create any type of marine you could imagine. If it's a more mixed party, I think the new system is nice due to the wide variety of options you can use. / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / - + + + -Copyright © 2010-2014 Tinyboard Development GroupCopyright © 2012-2014 vichan-develCopyright © 2013-2019 N.T.
